Homeowner guide

How do I get my deck ready for summer cookouts?

When the weather warms up in Georgia, the deck becomes the heart of the home. But before you invite the whole neighborhood over for burgers, you need to make sure the space is actually ready for a crowd. I have seen too many homeowners skip the prep and end up with a safety hazard or a ruined finish. Here is how I handle it.

Guide

Start With a Deep Clean

You cannot tell what is going on with your wood until the gray winter film is gone. Start by clearing everything off the boards. Use a stiff brush and a mild cleaner to get rid of pollen, mold, and bird droppings. Do not go overboard with a pressure washer, or you will gouge the wood.

Guide

Check Your Safety and Railings

Safety is the most important part of the job. I always tell folks to walk the perimeter and give everything a good shake. If a railing wobbles, it needs a screw or a new bracket right now, not after a guest leans on it. Look for any boards that have popped up or splintered.

How it works

Five steps. No surprises.

  1. Call, text, or send the form

Tell us what is going on: a new deck, a repair, or “not sure yet.” We reply the same day.

  2. Free on-site visit

Breno looks at the deck or the yard himself, measures, and goes over your options with you.

  3. Written estimate

Scope, materials and price come in writing, so you know the plan before anything starts.

  4. Schedule and permits

We agree on a start date and confirm any city, county or HOA requirement for your address first.

  5. Build and final walk-through

Breno is on the job, and we go over the finished work with you before we call it done.

Guide

Where to Put the Grill

The grill is the center of the party, but it can also be a fire hazard. Never put a hot grill directly against your house siding or under low-hanging eaves. I suggest leaving several feet of clearance around the heat source. If you have a wooden deck, a grill mat is a smart move to protect the finish from grease and heat.

Guide

Setting Up Furniture and Shade

Once the deck is clean and safe, you can think about the layout. You want a natural flow so people are not tripping over chair legs while carrying plates of food. If your deck faces the afternoon sun, you will need a plan for shade. A large umbrella or a sail can keep your guests from overheating in the July sun.

Guide

Managing Bugs and Lighting

Nothing ruins a party faster than a swarm of mosquitoes. I recommend placing a few fans around the seating area, as bugs hate moving air. As the sun goes down, you need enough light so people can see where they are stepping. String lights are a great way to add a glow without needing a major electrical project.

Guide

The Final Walkthrough

Before the first guest arrives, do one last lap. Check that the furniture is stable and the grill area is clear of clutter. Make sure your trash cans are positioned where they are easy to find but not in the way of the food. A quick check now prevents a headache during the party.

Local notes

Around Canton and Holly Springs and nearby

Canton. Many Canton subdivisions, BridgeMill and Great Sky among them, are HOA communities with architectural review for exterior changes. If yours is one, tell us at the start so plans and approval fit into the timeline. Communities in the area include BridgeMill, Great Sky, Laurel Canyon, River Green.

Holly Springs. Large planned communities like Harmony on the Lakes operate with their own governing rules, and many Holly Springs neighborhoods have an HOA that reviews exterior additions. Tell us yours and we will plan the approval around it. Communities in the area include Harmony on the Lakes, downtown Holly Springs.

Ball Ground. Ball Ground is the quieter, more rural end of Cherokee County, with a small historic downtown and communities such as Hawks Ridge. Homes there often sit on more land and closer to creeks, woods and open views than in the busier southern part of the county. Communities in the area include Hawks Ridge, historic downtown Ball Ground.

Straight answers

Common questions

Can I use a pressure washer on my wood deck?

You can, but you have to be very careful. Too much pressure will shred the wood fibers and leave permanent marks.

What is the best way to stop splinters?

Use a sanding block on any rough areas you find during your safety check. A quick sand and a bit of sealer usually does the trick.

How do I know if my railings are unsafe?

Give them a firm shake. If there is any give or movement at the base, they need to be tightened or replaced immediately.

Should I seal my deck every year?

Not necessarily. I usually suggest checking it every few years by dropping some water on the wood to see if it beads or soaks in.

Should I wash the deck right before a party?

Do the cleaning a day or two ahead rather than the same afternoon. Wet boards are slippery and slow to dry, and a freshly rinsed deck can leave water on shoes and furniture. Giving it time to dry lets you check the surface, tighten anything loose and set up calmly.

How can I keep a deck cooler for guests in summer?

Shade is the biggest help, whether from an umbrella, a shade sail or a pergola. Lighter boards stay cooler under bare feet than dark ones, and outdoor rugs add a comfortable walking path. On a very hot afternoon, a quick rinse of the boards with water also takes the edge off the surface heat.
