Pergola in Alpharetta

An Alpharetta pergola works best when its size, orientation and posts are planned around the existing patio or deck, giving your backyard a finished, comfortable place to relax outdoors.

Alpharetta

Start with where the shade should fall

Most people picture a pergola in the middle of the patio, but the right spot depends on when you use the space. A pergola that shades the dinner table in the late afternoon may need to sit off-center or run in a different direction than the one that looks neat on a sketch. Before we talk about lumber, we look at the angle of the sun across your yard, which windows face the space and where the existing trees already throw shade.

In Alpharetta, many backyards have mature trees along the property line. Those trees help, but they also drop leaves, pollen and small branches onto anything built under them. We place the pergola so it adds shade where the trees do not, and we talk through how much open sky you want between the rafters so the space stays bright in the cooler months.

Alpharetta

Freestanding or attached to the house

A freestanding pergola sits on its own posts and footings, which makes it a good fit for a ground-level patio, a fire pit area or a spot out in the yard. An attached pergola ties into the house or an existing deck on one side, so it reads as part of the home and frames a door or a kitchen window.

Attaching to the house is not always the simple choice. The ledger connection has to be flashed and fastened so water does not get behind the siding, and the roofline, gutters and window trim all affect how high the beams can sit. When an attached design creates more risk than it solves, we will tell you and show you a freestanding layout that gives a similar look.

Alpharetta

Posts, footings and the ground under them

Alpharetta lots tend to have moderate slopes and the red clay that holds water after a hard rain. A pergola post is only as steady as the footing under it, so we size and set footings for the soil and the span instead of sinking posts into a few bags of concrete. On a sloped yard, the posts on the low side run taller, and we plan the beam heights so the top of the pergola still reads level.

When a pergola goes on top of an existing deck, the deck framing has to carry the new posts and the wind load on the structure. We check the joists, beams and footings underneath before we commit to that plan. If the deck is not up to it, posts can sometimes pass through the deck to their own footings below.

Alpharetta

Rafter spacing, wood and finish

The look of a pergola comes mostly from its top: the size of the rafters, how far apart they sit, how the ends are cut and whether a second layer of purlins runs across them. Tighter spacing gives more shade and a heavier look. Wider spacing feels lighter and lets more sky through. We sketch a couple of options so you can see the difference before anything is cut.

Pressure-treated pine is the usual starting point for a painted or stained pergola, and cedar is a common upgrade when you want natural color and a softer look. Either way, the wood needs a finish to slow down checking and graying in our humid summers. We can stain or seal the pergola as part of the job so it matches your deck, trim or fence.

Alpharetta

HOA review and city permits

Many Alpharetta neighborhoods have an architectural review committee that looks at outdoor structures before they go up. Requirements vary a lot from one community to the next, so tell us your neighborhood early. We can prepare drawings, material notes and color choices that make the submission straightforward.

Whether a pergola needs a building permit from the City of Alpharetta depends on its size, how it attaches to the house and where it sits on the lot. Stream buffers and specimen trees can also come into play on some properties. We look at your address and tell you up front what we expect the review to involve, and we confirm the details with the city rather than guessing.

How a pergola project runs with us

It starts with a visit. Breno comes out in person to walk the yard, measure the space, look at the house connection and listen to how you plan to use the area. After that you receive a free written estimate that spells out the design, materials, footings and finish, so you can compare it line by line.

Once the design is set, we handle layout, footings, framing, the rafter work and any stain or sealer you chose. We keep the site tidy as we go and walk the finished pergola with you at the end. We stand behind our finished work for a full year, so if something we built is not right, we come back and make it right.

Straight answers

Alpharetta homeowner questions

Can a pergola go over an existing deck in Alpharetta?

Often, yes. We first check whether the deck framing can carry the posts and the wind load. If it cannot, the pergola posts can sometimes pass through the deck to separate footings in the ground.

How much shade does a pergola really give?

An open pergola gives filtered, moving shade rather than full cover. Closer rafter spacing, a second layer of purlins, or a climbing vine all increase shade while keeping the space open to the sky.

Will my HOA in Windward or Broadlands need to approve it?

Many Alpharetta communities review outdoor structures, but each HOA has its own process. We can prepare drawings and material details for your submission once you tell us your neighborhood.

Does a pergola need a permit from the City of Alpharetta?

It depends on the size, whether it attaches to the house and where it sits on your lot. We review your address and confirm what applies with the city before work begins.

Cedar or pressure-treated pine for a pergola?

Pressure-treated pine works well and takes paint or solid stain. Cedar costs more but offers natural color and a lighter weight. Both need a finish to handle humid Georgia summers.

Can you add a pergola to a ground-level patio?

Yes. A freestanding pergola on its own footings works well over a concrete or paver patio. We set the posts next to the patio or core through it, depending on the layout.

What about pollen and leaves from nearby trees?

Trees drop debris on any open structure. We position the pergola to avoid the heaviest drop zones when possible, and a sealed finish makes the wood easier to rinse clean in spring.

Can a pergola be built on a sloped yard?

Yes. The posts on the low side run taller and each footing is set for its own height, so the top of the pergola sits level even when the ground does not.

Do you build pergolas in nearby cities too?

Yes. Along with Alpharetta, we work with homeowners in Milton, Roswell and Johns Creek, and the planning process is the same in each city.
