What does hot afternoon sun do to a deck?

A deck that catches the late-day sun gets the hottest light of the day on wood that has already been warming for hours. Over a few summers that shows up as faded color, rough boards, loose fasteners and finishes that give up early.

Where the damage shows up first

Walk your deck on a sunny afternoon and notice which parts are in full light. Those are the boards, steps and rail caps that will wear first. The low western sun hits the faces of stair treads, the sides of balusters and the tops of handrails almost straight on, so those parts dry out and fade faster than the boards close to the house.

Many homes in Holly Springs date from the early part of this century or later, and a lot of original builder decks are now at the age where this kind of wear is easy to see. In big subdivisions such as Harmony on the Lakes, decks on open lots with little tree cover often look much older on the sunny end than on the shaded end.

The same pattern turns up in the neighborhoods off Holly Springs Parkway, Hickory Road and Toonigh Road. Where builders cleared most of the trees, a back deck facing west can sit in full sun from the middle of the afternoon until the light drops behind the houses, while a deck that backs up to a wooded buffer may get only a few hours of direct light.

What heat and sunlight do to wood

Sunlight breaks down the outer fibers of wood, which is why boards fade, turn gray and feel rough. Heat dries the top of each board faster than the underside, and that uneven drying causes cupping and small cracks along the grain. Once those cracks open, every storm pushes water into them, and the wood starts to swell and shrink in a daily cycle.

That cycle loosens screws and nails, opens gaps at the ends of boards, and lets moisture reach the joists below. Surface wear on its own is mostly cosmetic. Water reaching the frame is what turns a refinishing job into a repair, so it is worth catching early.

Finishes, composite and railings

On a sunny deck, stain and sealer wear unevenly. Clear coatings usually fade first, and finishes with more pigment tend to hold up longer in direct light. Watch the sunny stairs and the handrail. When water stops beading there and the color looks chalky, it is time to recoat, even if the shaded boards still look fine.

Composite decking does not split the way wood does, but darker colors can get very hot underfoot on a summer afternoon, and some boards lighten over time. Wood railings take a lot of sun as well. Rail caps check, balusters loosen, and the sunny run of railing is often the first to wobble. A loose railing is a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one, so have it tightened or replaced.

Ways to keep a sunny deck in better shape

Sweep off pollen, leaves and dirt so they do not hold moisture against the boards and then bake on. Recoat before the finish is fully gone. Twice a year, walk the stairs and railings, press on the boards near the ends, and tighten anything loose.

Shade does more than any coating. A pergola, a shade sail, a large umbrella or a tree planted in the right spot can take the edge off the worst hours of sun. If you are replacing the deck, think about which way it faces, and consider a lighter board color for a west-facing deck.

Getting a sun-worn deck looked at

Breno comes out in person, walks the deck with you and checks the boards, stairs, railings and the frame underneath. He will tell you plainly whether a cleaning and a fresh finish will do, whether a few boards need replacing, or whether the deck needs a larger repair, and you get a free written estimate before anything is scheduled.

We work with homeowners across Cherokee County, including Holly Springs, Woodstock and Canton. If the work grows into a rebuild, whether it goes through the city or through Cherokee County depends on your address, so we help you confirm which office applies to your parcel. If your neighborhood has an HOA, check with the association about any review of exterior changes before work starts.

Straight answers

Holly Springs homeowner questions

Why do the stairs on my Holly Springs deck look worse than the rest of it?

Stair treads and stringers often face the late-day sun head on, so they dry, fade and crack sooner than boards closer to the house.

Is gray, rough wood on a sunny deck a sign of rot?

Not by itself. Gray, rough boards usually mean surface sun damage. Rot shows up as soft spots when you press with a screwdriver, often near board ends or where water sits.

Can a builder deck in Harmony on the Lakes that has faded in the sun be refinished instead of replaced?

If the boards are still solid, cleaning, light sanding and a new finish can restore a smooth surface. Deeply split or soft boards should be replaced.

How do I tell when the sunny end of my deck needs a fresh coat?

There is no fixed schedule. Watch the sunny boards and stairs, and recoat when water stops beading and the color starts to look washed out.

Do lighter composite colors stay cooler on a west-facing deck?

Generally, yes. Lighter boards reflect more sunlight than dark ones, which helps on a deck that faces the afternoon sun.

What should I check on sun-baked railings at the end of summer?

Push on each post and the top rail, look for cracked rail caps, and check for loose balusters. Anything that moves should be fixed before someone leans on it.

Will a pergola or shade sail slow down sun damage on my deck boards?

Shade cuts the hours of direct sun on the boards, which slows fading, cracking and finish wear and makes the deck more comfortable to use.
