Why Shade and Mature Landscaping Favor Composite
Dunwoody is an established suburb, and many homes have mature landscaping that a deck needs to work with. Big trees mean shade, leaf litter and moisture that lingers on the deck surface. Wood boards in that setting can stay damp, grow mildew and break down faster than boards in full sun.
Capped composite boards have a protective shell that resists moisture, staining and mildew better than bare wood. They still need occasional cleaning, especially under heavy tree cover, but they do not need sanding or staining to keep their color. For a shaded back yard, that difference shows up every season.

Capped Boards, Colors and Surface Texture
Most composite boards today are capped, meaning a durable outer layer wraps the core. Within that category, products vary in how deep the texture is, how natural the grain looks and how many color tones run through each board. Some lines are designed to look like exotic hardwoods, while others aim for a simple, even color.
Color affects more than looks. Darker boards can get noticeably warm in direct sun, while lighter tones stay more comfortable underfoot. In a shady Dunwoody yard, heat is often less of a concern, so darker colors may be practical where they would not be on a deck in full sun. We bring samples so you can see and feel the options at your house.

Setting Up the Frame for Composite Boards
Composite boards are not as stiff as many wood boards, so manufacturers specify how far apart joists can be. An older frame built for wood decking may need extra joists or blocking before composite goes on, especially if you want boards installed on a diagonal. Skipping that step leads to boards that feel bouncy or sag between supports.
We also look at the condition of the existing joists and the ledger at the house. Composite boards can outlast the wood frame under them, so it makes sense to start with framing that is ready for a long service life. If the frame needs work, we include it in the plan.

Fasteners, Borders and a Clean Finish
Hidden fastener systems clip into grooved board edges and leave the surface free of screw heads, which gives composite decks their smooth, finished look. Color-matched screws are another option for spots where hidden clips do not work, such as stair treads and border boards.
A picture-frame border around the edge of the deck hides the cut ends of the boards and gives the surface a tailored look. Matching fascia boards cover the rim joists, and composite stair treads and risers carry the same look from the deck down to the yard.

Stream Buffers, Permits and Neighborhood Approval
Some Dunwoody lots may include stream buffers, so creeks and drainage areas can limit buildable space. Land disturbance and tree removal near a stream buffer may be limited, so confirm the rules with the city before planning. If your deck is near a creek, we check the parcel before the estimate is written.
Ask the City of Dunwoody and DeKalb County whether your deck needs a permit or inspection before work starts. Many neighborhoods, including Dunwoody North, Dunwoody Club Forest and Brooke Farm, have associations, and some require architectural approval for exterior structures. Tell us your neighborhood and we will plan for that step.

Getting Started With a Composite Deck
Breno visits your home in person, looks at your yard, your existing deck if there is one and how much shade the area gets, and walks you through board lines and colors. You then receive a free written estimate that spells out the framing, boards, fasteners, railings and stairs.
When the deck is complete, we stand behind our finished work for a full year. We install composite decks for homes near Dunwoody Village, along Chamblee Dunwoody Road and Mount Vernon Road in DeKalb County, and in nearby Sandy Springs, Brookhaven and Roswell.

Dunwoody homeowner questions
Does composite decking hold up under the heavy shade in Dunwoody yards?
Capped composite resists moisture and mildew better than bare wood, which helps in shade. It still needs occasional cleaning, but not sanding or staining.
Can composite boards go on the existing wood frame of an older Dunwoody deck?
Often, if the frame is sound and the joist spacing meets the board manufacturer's requirements. If it does not, we add joists or blocking before the new boards go down.
Will dark composite boards get hot on a mostly shaded Dunwoody deck?
Darker colors can get warm in direct sun. On a shaded deck that is less of an issue. We show you samples and talk about how much sun your deck gets.
Is capped composite worth choosing over uncapped boards in a damp, shady yard?
Capped boards have a protective outer shell that resists staining, fading and moisture. Most boards on the market today are capped, and that is what we typically recommend.
How should leaves and spring pollen be cleaned off composite boards?
Regular sweeping and an occasional wash with a soft brush and mild cleaner keeps most composite surfaces looking good. Proper board gaps also let debris fall through.
Can composite stair treads and fascia be matched to the new deck surface?
Yes. Composite stair treads, risers and fascia can match the deck surface, and there are rail systems that pair well with composite boards.
Will my Dunwoody neighborhood association need to approve composite decking?
Some Dunwoody associations require architectural approval for exterior structures. Tell us your neighborhood early and we will help plan for that step.
Where do hidden clips fall short on a composite deck, and what is used instead?
They work on most of the field boards. Stair treads, borders and some edges often use color-matched screws instead. We explain where each method is used.
Do you install composite decks in Sandy Springs and Brookhaven too?
Yes. Along with Dunwoody, we install composite decks in nearby Sandy Springs, Brookhaven and Roswell.
